What I still miss about Kansas

Texas (Austin area) just doesn’t get thunderstorms like we do in Kansas. My sister’s ex-boyfriend’s status update this morning said something about mean, low, rolling thunder. So I texted my mom: “Am I missing spring storms?” She said, “Yes indeed, hail and thunder.”

Is it natural to miss whatever climate you grew up in? Do displaced Alaskans miss snow? Do I actually have an interest in tornado-warning weather and those wailing sirens or is it just that such weather is synonymous with home?

I’ve been here for almost two years, and I still haven’t seen (heard, felt, cowered at) a thunderstorm that satisfied me. I think I could go my whole life without moving back to Kansas, but if I do, I am afraid I’ll always long for those storms.
